Quentin Tarantino Responds to Ye’s Claims That He Had the Original Idea for ‘Django Unchained’

Quentin Tarantino has responded to Kanye West's recent claims regarding Django Unchained, wherein the YEEZY head alleged that the filmmaker had stolen the film's original idea from him.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, Tarantino refuted the claims and said that "there's no truth to the idea," adding that he already had plans for Django Unchained before he even met Ye. “Okay, well, there’s no truth to the idea that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django, and then he told it to me and I go, ‘Hey, wow, that’s a really great idea. Let me take Kanye’s idea and make Django Unchained out of it.’ That didn’t happen,” he confirmed.

The filmmaker did reveal, however, the West once had the idea for a "giant movie version" of College Dropout and briefly shared the idea of "Gold Digger" music video the artist had. “He wanted to get big directors to do different tracks from the album and then release it as this like, giant movie," he said. "Not videos, oh no, there’s nothing as crass as videos — they were movies. They were gonna be movies based on each of the different tracks. So we used it as an excuse, me and Kanye, we used it as an excuse to meet each other.”

Tarantino continued, “He did have an idea for a video, and I do think it was for the Gold Digger video, that he would be a slave and the whole thing was this slave narrative, where he’s a slave and he’s singing Gold Digger." The plans never came to fruition, with one reason supposedly being West wanting “no expenses spared” for the project, but the filmmaker thought that "it sounded really cool" and he wishes it had happened. "Anyway, that’s what he’s referring to.”
